While those methods revolutionized oncology, they all share one major weakness: they rely on the immune system’s strength. For patients with weakened immunity, these treatments often fail to deliver lasting results.

That challenge inspired Professor Miyako’s team to find a new solution — one that works even when the immune system does not.

AUN Therapy: Two Bacteria, One Powerful Alliance

At the core of this innovation lies a unique microbial partnership called AUN, named after the Japanese concept symbolizing balance and harmony between opposites.

AUN therapy combines two natural bacterial species that complement each other perfectly:

  • Proteus mirabilis (A-gyo): A bacterium that naturally infiltrates tumors, attacking cancer cells and disrupting blood supply.
  • Rhodopseudomonas palustris (UN-gyo): A photosynthetic bacterium that supports and regulates A-gyo’s behavior.

Together, they create a self-regulating system capable of targeting and destroying tumors without external immune assistance.

How AUN Works: Smart Bacteria That Outsmart Cancer

The AUN bacterial consortium is a living, intelligent system that adapts within the tumor environment. Here’s how it works:

  1. Precise Tumor Targeting:
    AUN bacteria locate and infiltrate tumor blood vessels, cutting off oxygen and nutrients.

    Once inside, A-gyo changes shape (filamentation) in response to tumor-specific chemicals, boosting its tumor-killing ability.
  3. Dynamic Bacterial Ratio:
    The bacterial balance naturally shifts from 3:97 (A-gyo to UN-gyo) to around 99:1, maximizing its cancer-fighting potential.
  4. Reduced Side Effects:
    AUN’s built-in balance prevents overgrowth and minimizes cytokine release syndrome (CRS) — a dangerous immune reaction common in traditional therapies.

This biological precision makes AUN both effective and remarkably safe.

The Harmony of AUN: Balancing Power and Safety

The beauty of AUN lies in its symbiotic equilibrium.
While A-gyo aggressively attacks tumors, UN-gyo moderates its behavior, ensuring stability and safety within the body. This collaboration reflects the ancient Japanese concept of “AUN” — the peaceful coexistence of opposing forces.

This harmony allows the bacteria to remain compatible with human tissue, showing minimal toxicity and strong biocompatibility in both animal and early human models.

Professor Miyako’s team is preparing to launch a startup to accelerate the clinical development of AUN therapy.

“A new chapter in bacteria-based cancer therapy — pursued for over 150 years — is finally beginning,” said Professor Eijiro Miyako.

Clinical trials are expected to begin within six years, potentially opening the door to immune-independent cancer treatments for millions of patients worldwide.
