China has once again set a new benchmark in rail technology. During recent pre-service tests, the CR450 high-speed train prototype reached an astonishing 450 kilometers per hour, officially becoming the fastest train in the world. The record-breaking test, announced on October 21, took place along the high-speed railway linking Shanghai, Chongqing, and Chengdu — one of the country’s most important transportation corridors.
The Next Generation of “Fuxing” Trains
Launched in 2021 and developed under the supervision of the China State Railway Group, the CR450 project represents the new generation of China’s celebrated Fuxing trains, already renowned for their speed and reliability. Until now, the title of the fastest train belonged to the CR400 model, which could travel at a maximum speed of 350 km/h.
But the CR450 is not just faster — it’s smarter, sleeker, and more efficient. Every design element has been re-engineered to optimize aerodynamics, energy efficiency, and passenger safety. The train’s aerodynamic nose has been extended from 12.5 to 15 meters, cutting air resistance by 22%. New lower panels now cover the wheels and carriages to reduce drag, while the body height has been trimmed by 20 centimeters. Despite a 55-ton increase in weight, the CR450 boasts a more powerful thrust, accelerating from 0 to 350 km/h in under five minutes — 90 seconds faster than previous models.
A Massive Leap Toward Commercial Operation
Before entering full commercial service, the CR450 must complete a 600,000-kilometer testing phase to obtain certification. Chinese railway officials have already confirmed that the first models will enter regular service within two years, cutting travel times by up to 20% between major cities.
From “Made in China” to “Created in China”
Beyond the technological feat, the CR450 carries strong symbolic significance. As reported by CCTV, China’s state broadcaster, the new train represents “a transition from an era of ‘Made in China’ to one of ‘Created in China’,” reflecting the country’s growing ambition to lead in global innovation rather than merely production.
The train’s development involved multiple subsidiaries of the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), the world’s largest railway equipment manufacturer — reaffirming China’s dominance in the high-speed rail sector.
Powering China’s Expanding High-Speed Network
The CR450 is part of a broader national plan to modernize China’s massive infrastructure network. Today, China operates the largest high-speed rail system on the planet, spanning more than 45,000 kilometers of dedicated lines. Its integrated transportation system — including railways, highways, ports, and airports — covers over 80% of China’s territory and serves more than 90% of its population.
During the recent National Holiday Week, the scale of this network was on full display: over 2.4 billion passenger trips were recorded in just seven days, including 213 million train journeys. These numbers highlight how high-speed rail has become a cornerstone of Chinese mobility.
The official debut of the CR450 is expected in 2026, marking a new era of speed, efficiency, and innovation in global rail transport.
